Hair conditioners these days are a complex concoction, mostly made of various natural emollients, humectants (like glycerin), proteins of different molecular weights, amio-acids and silicone based compounds, in water. They do work. They form a protective layer on hair cuticle. They help hair retain its natural water content. And some really good conditioners can actually repair damaged hair by "inserting" the proteins into the voids on damaged hair shaft, so that hair appears stronger and smoother.
