I am a finance student with a focus in real estate at the university of alabama. I went to NYC this past august and absolutely loved it. I have constantly thought about how bad I want to go back & how amazing it would be to live there once I graduated. HOWEVER, I have been dating my boyfriend for almost 8 years and we love each other dearly. But - he hates the city. We have been discussing moving somewhere on the Florida coast once we marry, but I have always pictured myself as a "city girl". He's more of a "country boy" who wants a lot of land and privacy. Living somewhere secluded will not bother me, I just don't want to regret what I didn't do later in life. How can we compromise?

Also, will it be hard for me to find a job in the finance/real estate field and make around 90,000 or more?

The question about finding a finance/real estate job & income was supposed to say "in NYC".

C'mon people, I know I'm not going to graduate making $90,000 starting out; but it is possible to have this as a goal & reach it. I have jobs being thrown at me here in ALABAMA

I know exactly how you feel, I'm a recent college grad from a small area around Atlanta myself and actually just got a job offer in NYC (I will be relocating in exactly 3 weeks). I've always loved NYC and has visited numerous times, and wanted to work there since the age of 12. So, after graduating this past may, I know that if I don't do it now, I probably will get too comfortable here in Atlanta, and not move...ever.

But, believe me, it's definately harder than one can think to find a job in the city and I went to Emory with a finance degree. Not only was I not "special" in the city (since everyone wants to move there and NYC is already filled with Columbia, NYU, Cornell grads with better name recognition than my school), many companies don't even look at resumes from out of state, to avoid paying relocation fees. But, I busted my butt, and did get a job as a financial analyst and will be making around 50k w/signing bonus (not enough to live comfortably in the city still). It's normal, since most people rought it for a year or two first. However, I'm actually better off than my friends who are working for Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch at minimun 80-90 hrs/week (making only 65K).

Either way, don't let anyone tell you that you can't make that 90K, you just have to put in the hours and do a lot of hard work down the road, but get your foot in the door first.

Ok, back to the BF situation, you guys can always live in NJ, Long Islang, Queens, or even Staten Island and commute to the city for work. No, you won't get the glamurous lifestyle, but it should let you know if New York is for you. Besides, you are so young, remember you are not stuck there forever if you hate it...you can always move to florida or back home in a couple of years (let your Bf know that). So, do it now, while you can, before you have obligations like children and family...which then you can retreat to suburbia...

Good luck to you both~

New York City is a very expensive place to live. Jobs for new grads making $90,000 do not exist unless maybe you are a Harvard Grad and placed #1 in your class.

Everyone has to start at the bottom so try sending out resumes to NYC companies you would be interested in working for to see if you can get some interviews lined up. Be sure to put your expected salary range in your cover letter to eliminate opportunities in the mid $30's.

Also subscribe to or buy the New York Times Sunday edition to check out the cost of apartments and the classified job sections. This will give you better insight into the real NYC picture.

New York City streets are not lined with gold. Do your homework before setting off on your adventure. You may decide Florida is a better idea.

Also, If you want a family, Florida is a much better idea.

Certain parts of Harlem and Brooklyn are coming up but be careful where you look. Unfortunately because I lived there a year and then got a better Job don't have specifics for you. . I moved to NYC and was living in North Bronx as a Caucasian in a Jamaican neighborhood I felt very safe and welcome. Sometimes working class immigrant neighborhoods are very safe. In addition there are some jersey locations that have great rentals that are much cheaper and also closer to Manhattan than some of the other boroughs. Unless you have family money or a great job Manhattan may be out of the question. Good Luck

A friend of mine did an internship at Bear/Sterns. For 3 years he worked 80 hour weeks for $50,000. At the end of the 3 years, the 250 folks he stated with were down to 12. B/S hired all of them for $110,000.

THE MONEY IS IN NEW YORK. YOU'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE HALF AS MUSH AS YOU WILL HERE. I LIVE IN NYC AND HAVE LIVED HERE ALL MY LIFE. I CAN'T SEE MYSELF LIVING ANYWHERE ELSE. THE PACE IS FAST AND THEIR ARE SO MANY PEOPLE HERE THAT YOU CAN BE ANONYMOUS. THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS THAT YOU MOVE CLOSE TO A BIG CITY AND TRAVEL TO WORK. IF YOU WANT TO MOVE TO FLORIDA TRY TO GET WITH IN DRIVING DISTANCE OF MIAMI. THAT'S THE HAPPENING CITY IN FLORIDA.
GOOD LUCK. TALK TO YOUR BOYFRIEND NYC IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE BEST TALENT THE COUNTRY HAS TO OFFER.

FLORIDA GIRL IS A LITTLE BIAS. YOU WILL NEVER MAKE AS MUCH MONEY IN FLORIDA AS YOU WILL HERE. MY MOM LIVES IN SARASOTA FL. AND I WAS CONTEMPLATING MOVING THERE BUT I WOULD LOSE MORE THAN HALF OF MY SALARY TO MOVE. I STILL LIVE HERE. NYC IS VERY EXPENSIVE BUT IF YOU MAKE 90K YOU'LL BE OK

You and your boyfriend have some deep thinking to do and you may be incompatible as grown ups.

And unless you are a straight 4.0 student with TONS of real world experience, the odds of you making $90k anywhere are slim to none.

BTW, Financial Analysts are CPA's and you can't be a CPA with a Finance Degree (unless you took all the accounting classes the college offered). Sorry to rain on your parade

You don't have to live right down town. People commute everyday into the city. That would gve you the income and him his acreage with privacy. Compromise but don't close your mind to country living with the city profession. You won't regret it!
