For a women, it's not about quantity, it's about quality.
The key is to make sure the present, or presents have thought put into them.
For example, one of the best presents I ever got from my husband was a bedding set, quilt, sheets, etc. It was incredible because I had only mentioned once how much I would love a new set, and then he actually had the forethought to have my best girlfriend pick it out, because he doesnt know anything about bedding, it was very sweet. It showed he was a listener and not to proud to ask for help. Very thoughtful.
To come up with an idea for yourself, just take note of your conversations, at some point she will mention something she likes. Remembering the little things is a big deal. Like you could do several small things. If she is a romantic, then do a cd of your wedding song, a book about something she likes, and maybe a ring with the kid's birthstones to thank her for being such a good mom.
good luck

Do her a stocking. I love that, lots of little things that show her you know what will make her smile with mean a lot. A small stocking with a few really decadent bits like a fancy lipstick, a little bottle of scent, a pair of earrings. Take inspiration from things she already has, see what her favourite make up colours are or sneak a few to a department store where they can help you. The best present you can give her, especially if you have kids is to spoil her, show her you take the time finding out what she really loves, get her bits that will make her feel special.

Get her lots of little things and spread the surprises over the day. Hide presents around the house, in drawers, cupboards, the oven etc. Give her clues throughout the day to finding them (just remember where you put them yourself!!!)
It will elongate the Christmas experience for her and she'll really think you thought about it rather than just shopping for her. Finish the day off with a letter from you to her - telling her how special she is. Something she can keep forever.

Something small that costs BIG! Like an eternity ring or something personal for her.
Woman dont like to receive presents for the house and perfume is boring.
Oh and a couple of smaller pressies always go down well as stocking fillers!

You could buy a few presents ranging from size and price and put them all over the house on Christmas day and then send her on a treasure hunt around the house.
Leave her a note on her bedside table or put a card on a tray for when you take her breakfast (if that's what you feel like doing) giving her clues as to where to look...you will see the smile on her face get bigger with each pressie she finds.

If you can afford it, try doing several gifts over several days. Sort of like the 12 days of Christmas. Now, I'm not saying get her Lords A Leaping or anything, but 12 roses on the 12th day before Christmas. On day 11 you could get her 11 pieces of her favorite chocolate. On one day when you're not working, you could take that amount, say 6, of hours and take over completely. Let her put her feet up for 6 hours... you do the cooking, the cleaning, the child minding all on your own. It could all lead up to Christmas day when you give her one simple and romantic gift.
If you really get into it, you will have her smiling for years!

Personally, I would enjoy a few little ones more than I would a big one. Only because it meant that you put a lot of thought into each gift and I would find that incredibly sweet.
Especially, if you didnt give them to her all at once. Put one here for her to find, another there, in various little places where you know she would find them, preferably when you are not at home or something so she thinks about it all day before you see her.
You should talk to my fiance! lol

Nah not women only,
Women love the "thought that counts" it can be big small one or many the thing here is it has to have thought behind it. What does she really love? My wife loves flowers so I buy them spontaneously not just birthday or chrismas she also love Agatha Cristie (i hate it by the way) so I buy her books or DVDs, the best present you can give is one that is truly for her and cannot be mistaken as one for you as well. We both like sci fi so I avoid that . The answer then is not how big or how many but your desire to give her extreme selfless pleasure

If you don't usually exchange gifts at Christmas I would keep things simple and do lots of small things, some silly, some practical, some pampering. It will be lots of fun watching her open them and she also wont feel so overwhelmed and bad as she would if you purchased something big and extravagant. The children will also enjoy helping her.
Do hope this helps and have a fun Christmas.
