True, as a general guideline.

What a big insult to tip a business owner. The basic US society norm, we don't tip well off people or educated people, etc. Do you tip your Doctor, Lawyer, or Dentist? We tip people with basic skills that we are told make a basic wage who are relying on their supplemental tip income to make ends meet. If you tip the owner, you are insulting him by implying that he is basic laborer and needs supplemental income. The bigger and more profitable the business, the bigger your insult.

Barber is boarder-line, as you would tip a barber who isn't an owner. And say if a restaurant owner is short staffed, and doing waitress duties. You would assume the waitress is a waitress and tip, unless you know better. Thus if doing that role, an owner may act in that role (i.e. not be insulted by a tip) But they might? I think if I knew enough that I was waited on by the owner, I would feel comfortable enough to ask. "Hey. I feel like tipping. Are you ok with that?"

Another area I have seen is local independent fish guides are happy to get huge tips from tourists.

If the owner cut your hair, or served your table at a restaurant, then YES YOU TIP! Because we're doing the exact same work as our employees. Do you have any idea how many times I've heard "I don't need to tip because you own the place, you probably take everything out of the register!" They don't realize that I'm working my own butt off for THEM, and I still have a stack of bills on my desk that need paying. If they're giving you the service, then please...TIP!

If the owner is the person providing the service like cutting your hair then they are entitled to any gratuity that you see fit to give. I dont think their is a rule against it because if they are cutting your hair and they own the place then they are also part of the service staff.

No that is not true. You tip for the service and result, not for who owns the shop.
