I have given up smoking (5 months - great, I hear you say) - but now, every time I get a craving for a cigarette I have to answer a question to get over it. What can I do?

Thanks guys, some great answers but smoking is not really the problem now, its Yahoo Answers or the computer.

I hear and feel your pain. I smoke, I'm not proud of it!!!! I want to stop but I'm a closet smoker and I hide it from others. I quit off and on and then start up again. If you have made it 5 months I'm really proud of you! I hate how some people can smoke and quit at will and others can quit for 10 years but if they have just one cigarette they are hooked again. My suggestion is for you to try to keep yourself busy so you don't think about it and when a craving hits, do something good for yourself instead of smoking. Being alone and bored is about the worst thing that can happen to someone trying to quit. For all of you idiots that are on here slamming smokers, you just don't understand how emotional you get when you quit... the mental addiction makes you feel like you just lost your best friend... that is why I say keep your mind busy so you don't think about it.

Take yourself out of the situations that make y ou want to smoke, find out what your triggers are and combat them, take up a new healthy hobby that you really enjoy like yoga or running or swimming that smoking would inhibit, spend all the money youd spend on those cigarettes and buy yourself stuff that you can enjoy and look at and remember that had you been smoking you would not have had those items to begin with. Smell your self and relish the fact that you dont reek of cigarette smoke, and last of all really ask yourself "Why do i feel like a smoke right now" because if you can find the root cause and get rid of it you may get rid of those pesky cravings, its harder then hell to quit but congrats on the five months...dont throw them away! btw lexi smoking is a BAD addiction. Just because she isnt ruinging other peoples lives and hurting everyone around by smoking her doenst lesson the addiction, its just as hard to quit smoking as it is to quit those other addictions.

I gave up ciggs about 15 years ago, up until about 5 years ago, I still wanted to smoke in many situations. Then my husband started smoking again and all my cravings went out the window. He stinks up the entire room when he comes in from smoking, his car now has a constant smell and he is ALWAYS having to stop in the middle of something to smoke. Not to mention they cost almost $4.00 a pack now which is money we don't have. I would suggest, being around someone who smokes for a little while. Not joining them when they go to smoke, but seeing how terrible it really is, instead of glamourizing it may help. Maybe make a list you keep adding to as to what reasons you have to not continue smoking. Also, go to a bar, just being around all that smoke makes ME sick and takes any cravings away. Otherwise there is not much to take away your cravings, you will just have to live with it until it goes away and it WILL. Try not to hang with people you like that smoke, it is too much of a temptation. Especially don't go with them when they smoke.

You are passing one addiction off for another, try and do something different each time you crave a cigarette, it will stop you from getting into a habit of doing the same thing over and over again.

i know what you mean. i quit smoking and slamming meth. i quit drinking alcohol. i quit shooting up oxycontin. last week i tried to quit smoking. i went 6 days and then 3 days ago i smoke one cigarette, yesterday i smoked3, today i have smoked 2. what a waste to go through all that to start up again. but after reading the encouraging answers to your question i am motivated to stop for good again. one of the motivations, besides health and god for me was the money. do you know with the cost of each pack of cigarettes we can keep a starving child alive. that was pretty heavy for me. so that's where my money is going

Somethings you can try are drinking ice water...that helps take cravings away...also chew sugarless gum...suck on dumb dumb candies...you just have to find something to that works for you...working out helps too...if you like that kinda thing...
I quite 8 years ago..and it took a good year before I didn't have the cravings anymore...just remember that the cravings you are having are the physical ones not the ones from nicotine...keep being strong and not giving in...keep up the good work and good luck to you :)

Good for you, just keep answering the questions. Start your own blog, you can write down all your feelings etc, just like your own diary, this does help, believe me I stopped in Dec 2005. Also when you do get a craving, have a glass of water.
Keep it up

Answering a question to get over it sounds like a small price to pay for quitting a horrible habit that stinks and causes cancer. If its working, keep it up.

Start smoking again, there are limits to the questions that you can answer in a day.
