the pronouncation is a little bit hard for the ppl who come from the western country but the same thing happened to us no matter whether we are learning English or spianish so I have some suggestion to you.
1 every chinese character have it's own meaning, so when they coalescent they will get the similar meaning.(from all the characters) I'm just saying how to understanding the pharse.
2 get rid of your old grammer. If you just talking or chating, make sense is the most important thing, For example I can say "I go first or I first go"both in mandarin, both of it make sense. mandarin just have some baisc rules of the grammer
3 listen and chat more to pratice your pronouncation. there a a lot of accent in china even a native chinese can get confused sometimes, the thing you need to do is learning the beijing pronounction, that is the most oringional pronouncation. all the ppl can understand that.
4 try to know more about the chinese culture cuz we have many pharse come from ancient china and it have literary quotation.
anyways keep working on that I repeat again mandarin is totally not a hard langauge to learn!

Well, it's different for everyone. Though I wish you'd specify whether it's Cantonese or Mandarin. I speak both, but I was born in Hong Kong, so I'd speak Cantonese better. It's a hard language, I admitt, it's not easy. It's not true when people say that our language doesn't have any grammar, that is rubbish. Though, yes, you might want to throw all that English grammar out the window before entering that classroom, because it's totally different. The characters are different and they do have a few ways to make these characters, like water, we have it sort of like three dot like figures and nearly everything that associates with water would start with this, and this 'start' would be where you'd look first in the dictionary. It doesn't make much sense to you does it? Well, anyway, in Mainland China, they mostly speak Mandarin and they mostly use simplified Chinese, and in places like Hong Kong and Macau, we use Cantonese and write in traditional Chinese. Culture is also another matter, sometimes I think the Chinese would be more pleased if you knew about their culture and manners rather than the language, so it's a very crucial point too. Which ever it is though, good luck and give more than a bit of patience.

I am Mexican, Spanish is my language and I speak Chinese. I was as part of a cultural exchange in China in the year 2000. I can give you three advices:
1. Let all your grammatical structrures and conceptions out of the door, they are not gonna help. Empty your cup, and fill it with new water.
2. have patience and enjoy it, it might take you about 1 year to get it, but is not impossible. Actually, to speak chinese once you get the trick is really easy. The difficult part for us western cultures is the tones! yes, they have 4 tones that can change the meaning of a word completely! Most words are actually monosyllabical but there are words compounds too with different tones and totally different meanings.
3. Learn to write the charachters, since they are ideograms is important to always keep the charachter linked to its corresponding sound and meaning. Besides, training to write Chinese is not frustratung at all, is very relaxing because there is an order of strokes when writting a letter, a precise amount of strenght and of design in each stroke, so it's actually really enjoying.
be positive, you ca do it, is not impossible. believe me. the result is worth more than gold, because it's yours and nobody can take away. Your capacity to understand and to recognizxe patterns expands too as a result. cool isn't it?

i think chinese is one of easiest languages out there to speak. the writing and reading is what is hard. but speaking the language is easy because there is no conjugations or any other difficult stuff. it really doesn't matter what nationality you are...either you get it or you don't. making a sentence in chinese is pretty easy because it's literally translating it word by word. with no past, present, future tenses and all that other stuff. just try it, there's really nothing to lose, you'll either like it or don't, but at least you can say you tried.
