The Statue of Liberty was erected in 1886, when world population was little more than one billion and the U.S. population was 60 million. Many do not realize that the Statue of Liberty was a gift to the U.S. from France, with the title, "Liberty Enlightening the World". The statue and its symbolism had nothing to do with immigration, but rather hope that the rest of the world would adopt Democracy.

The Emma Lazurus plaque (it is not chiseled in the base), "send me your huddled masses" was added ten years later during the immigration peak of that age.

The sonnet, "New Colossus", was written by Emma Lazarus in 1883 as part of a literary campaign to raise funds for the completion of the Statue's pedestal. Not much attention was paid to it until the tide of immigration surged at the turn of the century. Proceeds that were raised from its auction were used to complete the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. This plaque memorialized the sonnet in 1903 and was placed on the inner wall of the Statue's pedestal. It currently is displayed inside the Statue of Liberty museum.

I think that she looks great for her age. LOL!
She is a symbol of freedom, liberty and justice that the entire world looks to the U.S.A. for. The United States is still the worlds leading democratic nation, with all its flaws and warts. I am glad that the statue of liberty stands tall in an AMERICAN harbor as a beacon of what is right & true in this troubled world.

People who immigrate to another country should have enough respect for their newly chosen nation to follow their laws and come in the right way. We have always had immigration. That hasn't changed. Republicans also want immigration reform but its a complete waste of time to make new immigration laws if they will not be enforced. We have immigration laws now but they are not enforced. The border is so porous that now instead of 600 major cities having a heavy presence of drug cartels, 1200 cities now do in just the last 5 years. People are dying because the Democrats want more Democrats. At what cost? I seriously doubt you even know what is in the Senate passed immigration bill. You just enjoy insulting people. Never mind the details or what those 1000 page bills contain.

I do think of the immigrants & the returning soldiers who sailed past her - but I'm fully aware that that is not the reason the French gave her to America. I got to see her in person for the first time in 2003 - she was so incredibly beautiful that I stood on the deck of the boat & cried. I didn't know I would be moved like that by Lady Liberty. I think if the terrorists took her out it would be a horrible blow to America - she probably would never get replaced. She is an amazing symbol of courage, hope, dreams & liberty.

Yes I knew that France gave the U.S. the statue. And I've never thought that it had anything to do with immigration. When I see the statue I just think of liberty and freedom, and feel pride that I'm an American.

Everything you just mentioned. It was a gift from a foreign country, and was the first thing many immigrants saw of the US. That's how they knew they were here. It is fitting that this statue would be adopted as a beacon for immigrants...I wish we could have the Emma Lazurus plaque on the mexican border...

To me the Statue of Liberty represents a huge statue, with big feet for kicking illegals out of the country.

I don't think it has anything to do with "illegal" anything...

The illegal aliens are grasping at straws by trying to use it a leverage in their quest to make wrong right.
