Definitely is abuse, you as a parent know you're hurting your kids right?
So it IS intentional. If you caught your kid smoking what would you do? Can you do anything, you're basically letting them smoke right now.
When you smoke in front of your kids look at them and imagine them puffing on a cigarette, because that is exactly the same effect.
Also you're putting them up for health risks like asthma, and they will be alot more likely to smoke if the parents do. So again I do believe it's abuse because you are intentionally hurting your kids. If you cared at all about their health you'd quite at any cost.

Yes, second hand smoke is dangerous to childrens' health. It condtributes to asthma, other respiratory infections, ear infections and a number of problems. It is cancerous and toxic. I do think that it is abusive and neglectful. Any parent who smokes around their children are selfish and trashy. Children don't have a choice. They have to put up with it for years. Both my parents smoked all throughout my childhood and it gave me health problems. For all the parents that say they only smoke outside are complete idiots thinking that it is okay and their kids don't get the exposure. They do and the article below proves it.

In a way no, because you aren't trying to intentionally hurt your children. It is a very bad example though. But on one hand you could argue that because you are exposing your kids to second hand smoke and it can do a number on them as far as allergies, asthma, and respiratory health go. I think that if you are going to smoke and you have kids that you should be required to smoke outside only and not in the house in front of them. It does have harmful effects on babies and children, but you are doing yourself a true disservice by destroying your body like that as well.

Yes. You as an adult can choose to smoke. Your child doesn't have a choice. They have to endure the smoke.
There are too many reports of second hand smoke being bad for non-smokers. That includes children and pets.

Asking that 50, even 25, years ago would've got laughter -- at best.
It's stupid, it's unfortunate, but abuse? No.
It also raises some 'slippery slope' problems. Are children living in substandard housing with lead-based paint, or bad neighbourhoods, being 'abused'? How about children who eat a lot of junk food?

You'd better be careful how far you go down this path. Smoking is not the only -- or the worst -- example you can set for your children, nor is its potential harm to them the greatest of other, more socially acceptable behavior.

I'm not sure, however I don't think people should do it, and I don't let anyone smoke near my daughter. I think the general public endures too much second hand smoke, especially in southern restaurants. Gross.

Yes. Second hand smoke is just as harmful as actually smoking.

Absolutely! Especially if they aren't old enough to get up and walk away. Second hand smoke has been proven to cause lung damage. If he/she wants to pollute their lungs, that is their choice...but it shouldn't be forced upon children.
UGH!

Yes...you might as well offer them a cigarette. And keep in mind that most kids who smoke usually live with people that do.
