When you stutter your mouth performs the action but it's really the fault of the brain: you don't trust your internal monologue. If a stutterer is asked to listen to white noise, or is talking in a room full of background conversation, usually, very suddenly, the stuttering stops. Stuttering is manufactured by self-consciousness.

Mine goes into a spasm. It's only started recently, since I've been under extreme pressure. What helps for me is to pause and relax my tongue, my jaw and my cheeks, and then say it again in a different way.

My dad says that as a child after his mother died he had trouble with certain consonants, and so he learned to substitute other words for those with tricky sounds.
