I am in the army in iraq, i am stationed on an airforce base, once a month we have a Bizaar, in which the airforce brings in local nationals to sell items to soldiers... The most popular item that is sold are pirated DVD's, these are sold at $5 a pop... the problem is that the airforce is profiting from these dvd sales. All over Iraq on differant bases shops are set up where these pirated dvd's are sold, although the military does not profit on all of them... I like buying cheap dvd's but i feel it is wrong... But then again what isn't wrong about what we do here? would it be ok if the military was not profiting from this?
thanks

How is the Air Force profiting from the sales?? Is the money going directly to the Air Force or is it just certain personnel or is it and Iraqi that has contacts with the Air Force??

I know it's illegal, but it's war. Don't you think you're entitled to certain things?? This is a hard one. The Hollywood actors and actresses are making millions of dollars a year. The military makes a small fraction of that. Once again, do you think you're entitled to something cheap since they're getting rich off it?? It really is only a decision you can make. I know when my hubby was there, I didn't want the DVD's, but many wives did. It was just my choice not to and not really because it was illegal. I just didn't want them.

Sorry I can't help more, but I really do think this will come down to what is right and wrong for you.

Good luck!! Come home safe!!

If you feel so strongly about this, talk to an AAFES representative. AAFES spends money to bring you items such as DVDs for your PX/BX at cost. Piracy undercuts AAFES ability to sell items to Soldiers and Airmen at fair prices. Chances are, if you do complain and AAFES feels that it is worth pursuing, those local nationals coming to the Bazaar once a month will be banned from the installation.

And I fail to see how the Air Force is "profiting" from pirated DVDs. Explain the mechanics of that if you will.

...but hey it goes WAAAAAAAY beyond pirated dvds....

But no the AirForce shouldn't profit from it... makes it kind of difficult to turn a blind eye to it when the moneys somehow winding up under your mattress.

why would you like to pay full price for a movie you would watch once or twice, and you know it only cost 10 cents to make, so $1 or $2 max $5 is fair, compared to 25 to 30 bucks somebody is getting billions and not helping the community.

Not going against you or anything but, I think you shouldnt profit from them. yeah okay, they bring in more money along with the paycheck ya know but, it's pretty much considered stealing.

As for being in the army , keep up the good work!

honestly its a question of personal morals... but I would say that if you're there risking your life for the military, don't feel too bad about ripping off a few millionaires in Hollywood... and thats coming from a liberal anti-war nut like me... morally I think you're fine.
