I am about to have a major surgery and I have a severe allergy to all opiate related drugs. Are there any other types of pain medications that I can take, that would actually relieve the pain after surgery?

The doctor can create a med cocktail of some of the other drugs used during surgery to put you out in order to give you pain relief during the first 48 hours.

After that there are non-opiad meds that can be used.
Be sure your doc knows of this allergy as not all opiats are the same and the ones used during surgerys are not something you would get from a druggest.

They are mixed with other meds to prevent allergic reations--only the Doctor can determine which will be safest.

Well if you are allergic to opiate related drug as a pain medications, understand it,You can ask your Doctor if Celebrax or Boxtra for a high degree for control of . arthritis pain. The over the counter medications like Motrin will also help you.So before you take any medications consult your Dr for Celebrax or Boxtra as now Viox is withdrawal from the market. Also read the label of medications and check if there is any possible side effect.

Most people with allergies to morphine do quite well with dilaudid, and that is almost always what is used when morphine isn't tolerated.. Fentanyl is another option, but it doesn't last very long. MOST people who report an "allergy" to morphine are not talking about a true immunoglobulin-mediated allergy, but rather an intolerance to the side effects of the drug. ALL opiates have side effects, and some people are particularly sensitive to them. In the future, what you want to do (whenever possible) is ask about regional techniques for anesthesia and post-op pain management. That uses local anesthetics to numb whatever hurts, and can eliminate or drastically reduce the need for opiates.

Talk to the anesthesiologist. If you have severe reactions, they need to know because that would be one of the thing they give you to put you under, during surgery and after surgery. Depending on what area of your body you are having the surgery on, they may be able to give you a nerve block or epidural.
