My puppies are Bailey and Rylee. They both know their names, but they have become accustomed to their nicknames as well, often responding in the same way as if we call them by their name. Is this a bad idea? I can't help it. Bailey... Buddy, Bubs. Rylee, Sis, Wiggle...
what are your pups names or nicknames?

Well our dog is named Dinky and we call her Dink Dink sometimes and I also call her baby girl. My mother-in-laws dog is named Joey and I call him chunk or jo-jo. His dad calls him doo-doo. They come to whatever we call them as well as their real name. I think it is fine to call them by other names as long as they know them and respond. Enjoy your babies.

From a training perspective this is not a good idea... if you want to ever take your dog through obedience training the dog needs to KNOW it's name... when training a dog you use it's name and dogs tend to respond best to easy names... the shorter the syllables the easier it is for your dog to understand... Madame Snugglemuffin is probably not the best choice for a dog. Dogs are more responsive to short commands such as "Bailey, sit" rather than "Baily-boo... sit down shnookums." And baby talk as hard as it is to resist (especially when they are puppies) is not good for your dog. The dog has trouble deciphering your vocal inflections so when you say "down" in a cute voice versus "down" in an aggravated voice the dog does not know that the two words you said are the same. Those things that seem to come instinctively such as baby talk or nicknames are simply confusing your dog... while it may not seem like it now if you ever want to pursue basic obedience training than this is not the best habit to continue

I think it is okay. My husband and I have 2 dogs, Rexey and Abby. We use their names when they are getting a treat or something special, or just being loved on. When we give them commands or punishing them we use the nicknames - 'boy' and 'girl'. Also, Rexey is our 'bubby'. They respond to their multiple names. But, just as a safety, they respond best to their regular names because there is nothing negative associated with when we use them. So if they were to get loose and run into the road, we could call them back with their given name, and they would be more likely to respond because it is associated with good things.

I call my Tiffany by a couple other names, like Tiffy and Tiffers. My husband often calls our Dawson, Buddy, cuz he's such a little buddy to have around. Our puppy's name, a Border Collie, is Shadow, tho she often gets called Monster Dog cuz she's such a little devil sometimes and we love her to pieces for it!

It's fine, I think animals actually like having nicknames because it's a sign of love. Every one of my pets have nicknames (baby doll, sweetypie, cutiepie, baby, kitty cat, pumpkin pie, brat[lol], sweety, kitty, pup, mutsy)and love it, one got mad when I called her by her real name!lol. As long as the animals know their real names there is no problem with nicknames.
