Once I found out how that got started I refused to say it anymore.

I still say it as a courtesy and habit. I just feel like it is rude not to say even though the statement itself has no real bearing on our current culture or beliefs.

Some people during the Great Plague believed that if a person sneezed it could be that they had bubonic plague so they said "bless you" as blessing that they not die from it. Some other say it was a sign of an evil spirit leaving your bodies and another explaination is that you are blessing the person so that the spirit cannot renter them

Its part of my Irish heritage going way back, before the Black Death.

You appear to appear to not have had a proper upbringing to other people.

I thought it was said due to one losing their breath while sneezing so you Bless them.
