The handle came straight down, and the spatula part was at 45 degrees, making it L shaped. ( like a gardening hoe) What is that used for?

With all due respect to the answers which have come in, Im not referring to an offset spatula (used for frosting cakes) nor a wok shovel. This spatula was L shaped, the spatula was at a right agle to the handle....

It's called an offset spatula and it's used for things like frosting brownies, where you want to spread something out without bending the spatula. You spread the icing with the flat part and the handle part goes upwards out of your way so you don't make a mess.

You can use it for just about anything a "normal" spatula is used for! It helps to have the angle to it for certain pans.
It can also be used as a spreader for frostings or smoothing.
Pampered Chef carries some. Excellent product.

I'd guess it's probably for serving pies or cake delicately.
