After eating, your body is devoting a large amount of its blood supply and energy to the digestion process and it’s common to experience stomach cramps if you exercise (and I'm guessing that includes swimming) right after eating a large meal.
According to the American Red Cross, you don’t have to wait to swim after eating if you stick with a light meal. Swim at your own risk if you’ve just had a lot to eat, because you’re at an increased risk of simply tossing your cookies (vomiting), and who wants to swim in that muck?

Eating and then swimming will not kill you. Eating too much then swimming can cause cramps that would make it very hard for you to swim. People have died by going swimming after eating too much because of the cramps and because they then panic. You will not die if you can make it to shore or out of the swimming pool before you drown.

Only if you eat too much poison.
Little joke. You might get a cramp from all the activity on a full stomach, which could interfere with your swimming, which is why moms don't want you to do it. But if you're comfortable and smart about where you're swimming, you should be okay.

Well, it's like this: If you eat a large meal your gut's priority is to digest it.So blood, whilst of course still flowing about your body, it is concentrated around your gut.
Now if you go swimming you use muscles, which will also need a lot of blood but it can't get quite as much as it needs (because a lot of blood is busy at the gut) , so your muscles may develop cramp. (Because they can't get all the oxygen they need from the blood)
Now if you are in deep water and you have cramp then you MAY drown.
So only eat something light before swimming or eat afterwards.
