I am going to be on an exchange program to Peking University in Beijing next semester. Anyone have experience living there and could tell me what to expect. I have traveled in Asia before, but never lived for any length of time...

which program are you doing? i did a study abroad program last fall where i studied at peking university or known in china as bei da (beijing daxue). it was absolutely amazing!

my program worked with the A.U. program, so we had really great profs. the school is nice, and it's located in an area that is like the university district. it's about a 20 minute walk (5-10 min cab ride...depending on traffic, it could easily be longer) away from wudaokou. wudaokou is full of foreign university students attending some of the various universities in the area. you can find bars, cafes (lush), clubs (propaganda) and some korean resteraunts there too. the AU program had their students living on campus, but my program had me in an apartment in wudaokou so it was quite convenient. there is also a subway/light rail stop in wudaokou.

if you're into clubbing you can always grab a cab to workers stadium and check out MIX, Vics, or babyface. MIX and VICS were some of our favs! be aware that getting to workers stadium is quite a ways away...but if you split a cab with friends, it can be well worth it. You can also go to sun li tun which is like a bar street near workers stadium where a lot of expats hang out. bar blu is a kool place in sun li tun. club banana is pretty krazy, but the floor is on hydrolics which can be fun. the popular club in wudaokou is called propaganda.

if you like to go bar hopping, you can check out hou hai...really nice place with a great strip of bars. there's a great pizza place over in that area too. i forget what it's called, but when i remember i will let you know!

for shopping you can go to the pearl market or the silk market for all kinds of goodies. there's a small market in wudaokou that you can go to, but don't get your expectations too high!

oh and if you want to buy a bike, make sure you get a great lock for it and always lock it to something...not other bikes...as it will get stolen. i had my bike for about 3 hours before it got stolen! hahaha.

definitely pick up a "that's beijing" magazine when you get there b/c it will give you full listings about things going on, places to eat, bars, and clubs.

if you have any other questions, let me know!

lucky! I already have a BSc, MA and MSc but would gladly go back to school to study in BJ too...

I have no tips for BJ unfortunately, but it is a very exciting place to study and live. One of my new staff is a PhD from BJ, I'll get some tips from him and get back to you.
