I was trained in ABA to work with children with autism. We had a token board made up where each time the child dealt with a stressor in the environment by taking a big deep breath or remaining quiet they earned a token. If they screamed or cried and didn't deal with the stessor the otherside of the token board (being the negative side) would be filled up and they would have to earn there way back. Essentially it was a way of teaching them how to behave socially and also personal strength within themselves so they were able to deal with their environment and meet challenges within it.

I used ABA when I worked in an in home program with children with autism. Our kids got 40 hrs/wk of 1:1 service. We developed an individualized program for each child. basically ABA is about breaking skills down to very small steps. Children with autism learn better when they are taught things in small steps. Also a huge part of ABA is giving positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior and ignoring negative behaviors.
