It gets red, painful and possibly pus will be present.

If it is infected, what you need to do is clean the area only with dial soap while in the shower. Nothing with fragrance or anything. Then twice a day take a small glass and fill it with warm water (warm as you can tolerate) and put half a tsp of salt in it. Mix it up and sit down. You will need to lean forward and position the cup around your belly button and then sit back. Sit like this for about 10 or 15 minutes and then lean forward to remove it. The salt water draws out any infection. You may notice some pus in the cup. Just discard and wash the cup thoroughly.

This was told to me to do by a great piercing parlor. Then keep your clothing away from it (dont let the top of your pants rub it or anything).

Best of luck!

I have mine pierced too! If it's infected it will probably hurt a lot and be really red. It may also be leaking some white pus. I'd go to the place you got it done and ask them what the recommend you put on it if it's infected.
