I agree that it's more likely tapeworms, but it could also be maggots. Maggots are a serious, immediate problem, as that means the flies have laid eggs under the skin and the fly maggots are now eating their way out, leaving many, many open wounds. Infection will set up quickly.

If it is tapeworms... maggots will be moving & crawling, and as someone else said, tapeworms will look like a grain of rice... they also need to be treated. They WILL show up on fecal examination, though they may be difficult to detect. Do a web search for tapeworm eggs and you'll see exactly what the eggs look like under a microscope. Tapeworm medicine is generally different from regular intestinal worm medicine (hookworms, whipworms, roundworms, etc.), but it is also now available over the counter, both at general stores and at the vet. It's simple to treat.

Tapeworms may come from fleas, but they can also come from ingestion of infected dead meat, such as deer. Deer very, very often are infested with tapeworms. Mice, squirrels and rabbits are also carriers.

Are you sure they are maggots? It is possible, but more likely, if they are small, white rice-like segments, that is tapeworm. You should take your dog to see a vet. tapeworms are transmittable to the puppies in utero. Please don't use any over the counter dewormer!!!! These may be dangerous to the puppies. Only a veterinarian can determine for sure that these are tapeworms (take in a stool sample and some of the worms that you saw if possible) and determine what type of dewormer is safe for a pregnant dog. Good luck!!

according to my vet, tapeworms are not detected from a stool sample, so they will run a culture for worms and if it comes back negative it's tapeworms. They have to give you special medicine for them. BUT tapeworms are actually from fleas when dogs bite themselves while itching for fleas they swallow them and it turns into those worms. So most vets will not treat for the worms before treating them for fleas and also the house. I had this problem with all 4 of my dogs as well as my cats. It was a pain to get rid of. We had to flea bomb everything, and give them 2 rounds of the worming medicine. Hoep it goes well !
