Yes been to tons of them, a nice cocktail dress or evening gown is fine, you'll have a great time, enjoy!
Now the rest LOL Well just pay attention to what goes on, there are several types of balls depending on the time of year and or event. They usualy last 3 hours or so but if you stay to dance the night away with your husband they can last quite late.

Wear a nice Formal. Basic Black seems to be the norm even though colour doesn't seem to be an issue these days. Is your DH wearing Class A's or Dress Blues? I would wear something that would compliment what he wears. At one of my DH's Military Formal a spouse was wearing a bright yellow long dress with huge flowers! Wear flats, unless you are used to being on your feet in heels.
They can last for 4 hours or so, depending on the type of Formal and how many Guest Speakers there are. Go early and allow time for photos...there will be a line for them.
Not everyone is required to attend...though, it can be 'encouraged' if you know what I mean? I know in my DH's old Unit, the NCO's and above were required to attend, while the E-4 and below were encouraged.
Just go and have fun....we only went to 2, and that was because of friends of ours were going and they were PCS'ing soon.

Been to a bunch of them. Wear a nice formal dress. The invitation usually say how long its going to be but there usually a recieving line where you are introduced to the VIP's. Dont be afraid, somebody will be in front of you so just fallow them, also you goin front of your husband so its a little akward especially if the person in front of you stop to chat an you have to stand for a while in front of the same person. After that people gets seated and they start the ceremony. It takes a while for all the protocols, and theres dinner. After that you get to dance and have fun. Good luck and have fun.

Wear Formal Wear, BE POLITE as possible (review your manners BEFORE You enter), and they last a few hours in the evening -- socializing time, Toasts, dinner time, invited speaker, Toasts, dancing/more socializing -- then pretty must it is up to those attending as to when it is appropriate to leave to their quarters. Plan on at least 3-4 hours of time for this event to occur.
