How do you get a shy guy to talk to you besides a word or two?

You need to ask open ended questions instead of yes/no ones. Ask about any hobby he has and to describe it for you. Or maybe he saw a recent movie (and you too). You can ask him what he thought about it, the actors, the plot, etc.
