Just recently we gave our chirpy happy, fun, budgie to family to look after whilst me and my partner were away in turkey getting married, we were away for 2 weeks. my partner also sprung a surprise honeymoon away which was also another 2 weeks away, this was all planned. my baby girl budgie has been well looked after by family as she was fed toast everyday? i was not impressed as my budgie was very healthy she ate fruit and barely lived in her cage. since getting her back, she is very overweight and is unable to fly. she was healthy when i left her, very slim and healthy she is now plump, my concern is... since we got her back, she's very quiet, doesnt want to fly, she doesnt make a sound as before when you walked in to a room she would go nuts with excitement? whats wrong with her, is it maybe because she is angry with me and my partner for leaving her? or is she pine-ing for those who gave her toast every sodding morning? im lost. i want my chirpy happy healthy budgie back. xx

I would go with offlight's suggestion. Treat her as you normally would. To exercise her, have her sit on your hand and lower your hand fast enough that she's forced to flap. Do this for 30 seconds for the first while them gradually work up the exercise until she can do it for five minutes at a time. She may be a bit annoyed with you for leaving, but more than likely she's just acting weird because of the weight. Give her time. She'll come around :-) . If she's used to free flying in your home, I would certainly encourage her to do that again! Perhaps leaving her food a small distance from her cage will force her to fly more. I had to do that to my cockatiels a few times.

Good luck :-) . She sounds like a complete doll!

If its a baby budgie and has a "blue beak" then it is NOT a baby budgie. It would be at least 5-6 months old as it takes that age for the cere above the beak to turn blue if male. If the cere is whitish blue then it is a young female.

She is probably feeling sick because she is overweight, which is why she is not the chirpy happy budgie you remember. It's possible that she also did not get much attention while staying with your family, try feeding her like you do normally and give her lots of attention. She will probably feel better when she starts to loose those extra ounces.
