I am a born Christian...but when I read Old Testament, I read all about people marrying many wives including their maids. Laying with own mother, father-in-law and sister-inlaw. Masturbation. Murder, jealousy, cheating etc.,....why all these things happened though God was close with them?

You are taking about the part before the Exodus Chapter. Before the handing over of the Ten Commandments. People lived in such a manner as was disgusting and God had patience. Please dont think that God did not communicate to his people if he was angry with them.

Some of the points you have discussed are not correct including laying with their mother and - Masturbation. However, the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was - Homosexuality which angers God even to this day.

These are cultures which developed out of the nations of the world where everyone followed their own life style.

Therefore in Exodus you see the turn around of the whole nation of Israel whom God calls out of their darkness and slavery into a nation whose freedom God gives through his Commandment.

There are many other things written in the Bible, like how to get get out of the clutches of sin and guilt and shame, how one should be conducting in this world, how one should relate to God and why was man made and what is to happen to the earth and what is your end and where would yu be spending it. do you think that all the above mentioned things were only a part of the old testament times? Look around you. read the papers ... God is more closer to the people in these times when the Bible says that each individual believer has the Holy Spirit to guide you, unlike the old testament times the spirit of God was only on chosen individuals that too only for a certain period of time till the purpose is achieved ... I suggest you read the Bible and the below mentioned link is a good one to help u.
