I think the sport is tennis not golf. If it really is golf consider this scenario. They are on the 9th hole of a 9 hole game. If Jerry was a really nice guy and added 10 shots to his score to make his friend look better, it must have taken Alan more than 10 shots to get out of the trouble his bad shot put him in. Did they have a side bet going?

because they were playing tennis. the game was tied at 30 (30-30), alan hit a bad shot so he was then trailing 30-40. Then jerry hit a good shot to win the next point and win the game. There's not enough information to determine who won the set and the match, but I'm guessing Jerry won those also.

They are on different holes. Jerry is on the 18th, and alan is on the 9th. At this point, it would be immpossivle for alan to catch jerry even if he got all 'hole in one's'.
