God knew that there was no hope for mankind at that time. "And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." --- Genesis 6:5 [ ASV ]
Besides Noah and his family, there was not one person alive who was not wicked or cabable of becoming wicked. So Jehovah did what was just and decided to bring those ungodly people to an end. By preserving alive righteous Noah and his family, he proved that he saves those who love and serve him faithfully.

you said obviously...
and you said common sense tells...
that is where the problem lies,
for not everything is obvious (at least not everything is obvious to some people)
and common sense is not as common as one would believe
having said that though
if God is God
and we assume that God is the Great I AM, the Great Intelligent Designer, the beggining & the end, the Creator, the Maker,...
then it is obvious and common sense will tell us that
God has all the power, the knowledge, the authority, the right to do whatever He wanted to any or all of His creations.
God's ways are not man's ways
& God's thoughts are not man's thoughts
God is the Creator & you & me are the created.
okay, but to answer your question, everybody became wicked at Noah's time (in God's eyes only Noah & his immediate family were doing what was right)
today, humankind is getting close to that level of wickedness once again (& do not assume that the wickedness you see today have not happened in the past, most of all the perversions we have today can be traced back to thousands of years ago, and for some, it might have been a lot worst in the past)
but unlike before, God will probably not wipe out humankind again as in the flood, one reason is that there are still people who are doing was are good in the eyes of God.
but God does have a plan B, not by water as before, but by fire, this time around.

NO ONE should guess what God was or ever is thinking. No one could ever know how what where or why a situation that God created for what ever reason. In today's society There are many wicked cruel and demented people that God is trying to reform. however he tries to do it is up to him. He is the only person who can truly know if we are possible of change in the right direction, That's why I have stopped believing in figuring it all out at all. He will tell me when I am ready.

Well, the majority of people were wicked and supposedly titans roamed the Earth.I think the purpose of the floods was to wipe out the titans. Not to make you think I know everything or am right, But I think everyone is somewhat good and bad like the yin and the yang.Every person has a light(good) and dark(bad) personality. It could be possible that everyones yang(bad) overcame their yin(good) thus pissing off the creator resulting with the genocide of humans.Im an atheist so I dont believe what Im telling you but this is what I read from the bible as a child.I could be wrong!

He saved 8. Apparently 8 is all He could find who weren't participating in the evil in the world going on at that time.
Out of those 8, He was able to start over in populating the world, and I personally believe that's why there is more of a balance in the world today. For every evil person you hear about or see in the world or in your neighborhood, how many people are there around you that you are glad to see every day?

If you're going to ask questions, at least do your research.
There's nothing more frustrating than hearing questions framed from a position of ignorance.
If you want to be an agnostic or an atheist, go be one and stop flirting with religion.
If you want to be a Christian, at least try to understand God's written Word to man.
I don't know what it is about skeptics and scoffers, you like to throw stones from the fringes without ever familiarizing yourself with what the Bible genuinely and actually says about a topic.
Get off the fence and either come in or get out.
If you want to accept God's free gift of abundant life, great, you're more than welcome.
If you want to reject God and walk in darkness, you have chosen to have no recourse after your body perishes.
I'd love for you to join me and the other saints of God who will receive new bodies as we enter in where there will be no more suffering, no more tears, no more sin.
But if you continue to reject the righteousness of Jesus Christ, there you'll be the day of your death in dark silence, unaware of the other lost souls nearby. Without ears, without eyes, without the sensation of touch, or smell, or taste. You will have no way of interfacing with the reality around you.
And if that torment isn't enough, there's the terror of knowing that it's for eternity. That God no longer hears your prayers, and that you had your three score and ten to say a 3 second prayer. Knowing that you decided not to say it every single day of your life.
What an opportunity God has provided you, and you slap away his offer and ask "Are you telling me God lumped all these people together and killed them all because of the actions of some, what a dick."
Is that the phrase you want to remember throughout eternity? When God arranged for His own Son to die in your place, you responded by saying "what a dick".

First of all, not everyone died in the flood. Noah and his family listened to God and built the Arc and were saved. Everyone else just made fun of Noah. Keep in mind that at that time things had become so bad that there was no hope left. It took Noah over 100 years to build the Arc and all the while people chided him and ignored God's warning...that he would send the rain and flood the earth. They all had the chance to be saved, but refused to believe the warning and chose to ignore God. God did what He said that He would. Everyone else just was too wrapped up in their own lives to listen. Today there is still hope, not to mention that God promised never to to that again. Noone is inherently good. Only God is good. We all sin in some way. The Bible says that "we all fall short of the glory of God". That is why He gave us Jesus. So that we might be saved. The warnings are there and the message is clear. You have the same choice as they did in Noah's time. It's up to you if you want to listen or not.

Genesis 6:5-8 (NIV)
The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth--men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air--for I am grieved that I have made them." But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
Your question comes to down to core beliefs. I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and that it tells the truth--that it is not exaggerating when it says that mankind had become completely evil. If so, wouldn't it be "common sense" to wipe them out and begin again?
So it comes down to this . . . will I trust the Word of God or your "common sense"? Sorry, but you lack the required credentials.

According to Christianity, and The Bible, God gave the people of the known world over 100 years to repent of their wrongdoings. Noah was the spokesman for God. Christianity teaches that back then in Noah's time all were willfully wicked in some way or another. And the Christian God was very patient and merciful and gave mankind over 100 years to repent(turn from their willfull wrongdoings). And only Noah's family and inlaws repented.
Today from the christian perspective, the return of Jesus Christ to the world is like the flood in the respect that if the peoples of the world do not repent of their willful wrongdoings, accept Jesus as their Master/Lord and savior they will be left behind while those that said the sinners prayer will go immediately to Heaven. According to christianity this acceptance of Jesus is a free gift, like receiving a christmas gift-that easy. It a choice just as it was a choice for those in Noah days for those people. The ark represented salvation and deliverance.
I know and understand what christianity teaches through research. It all depends on one's perspective on history, what one believes is truth, and choices.

We are all born with a sinful nature because of Adam and Eve's disobedience to God.
Noah was just as human as the rest of us however, the only difference is that he was righteous because he walked with God.
Other people were evil and disobedient and they were having sex and children with the Nephilim (Satan's giants).
Genesis 6:5-6, "The Lord saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain."
1 Peter 3:20, says that Jesus, after His death, went and preached to those who disobeyed long ago in the days of Noah. So you see, Jesus gave them a chance to accept Him and therefore go to heaven and live eternally with Him.
