China was one of the biggest imports of tea and very expensive to buy. Tea is also classed in many countries as something that heals/protects/sacred/precious strange I know but true.
The saying stems from tea being precious and valuable years ago hence when you truly love someone you would not swop them for all the tea in China ah bless!
Or put it like this if you owened all the tea in China you would be a billionaire times over

Tea is a big part of Chinese culture and if they're saying they wouldn't swap you for all the tea in China..that means you're pretty important!

The tea in China is supposed to be very good, and there is lots of it. Therefore if someone says they wouldn't swap you for it then it is a compliment. That's how I would interpret it.

Because China is full of tea, it's loaded with the stuff and if somebody wouldn't swap you for it then they are paying you a compliment and saying they wouldn't swap you for something that is really valuable meaning you are even more valuable to them!

Why so many question marks - stop being so dramatic.
In the 18th Century, tea was extremely expensive and a luxury only of the very wealthy.
To love someone so much that you would forsake "all the tea in China" would be the ultimate sacrifice and a lovely sentiment of love
Get it?

Like all the others say about a very valuable commodity - if you want to see more put ' tea clipper races' into a google search. There were valuable profits to be made as the first ships made it into port, one such very famous ship was the Cutty Sark which is preserved at Greenwich. Tea clippers 'clipped' days of the normal journey times because they were so well designed and built for speed.

This is a way of expressing how dear you are to someone saying this. And it must mean a lot since there is so much tea in China!
