A synagogue is a meeting place. It can be used for many things and has even been a hospital at times. Part of the synagogue is the sanctuary and sometimes there is also a smaller chapel where services are held. Reform services are much like church services, but are gradually returning to the more traditional Jewish services with more Hebrew than English. The Friday night service includes a blessing for the children. All the children under the age of 13 go to the bimah (stage) where the rabbi and someone else holds a prayer shawl over their heads like a tent and ask God's blessing over them. They then do a blessing over wine (juice for children) and sip the "wine." The Sabbath meal always start with blessings over wine and bread, but many Reform Jews don't observe the Sabbath so the blessing is done at the service instead.

All are welcome in synagogues. We have had several political debates recently in ours. We have many speakers who come from Israel, and we often have Inter-faith services which includes leaders and congregations from such faiths as Native Americans, Catholic, Protestant, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Hindu, etc. often with musical and/or spiritual events.

Synagogues have services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings, but the busiest time of the week is Sunday school when Jewish children spend the day in religious study, including Hebrew lessons.

We have many, many holy days (holidays) which are celebrated both at the synagogue and at home.

There is the sanctuary and the synagouge, the former being the area of prayer (mainly) and the latter the building it is housed in. A long time ago there used to be two building a house of study and a house of prayer. Now the two have merged into one building and even use the same rooms in Jewish academies. However, it is common to still study somewhat in the sanctuary or have prayers in the study room, but not at the same time it is being used for its main purpose, respectively.

The role of synagogue also changes based on culture, sect or location. In Israel or for Hassidic Jews, these places of worship are quite small.

In America on the other hand it is more of a community centre (though some communal relation in the Israel and for Hassidic synagogues) and actually has large halls for weddings, dinners, receptions (common after Saturday and Festival prayers) and general community events e.g. a hosting ground for community carnivals (not in the holy areas, of course, such as the prayer or study rooms). Since Jews study a lot there are often lectures arranged for the community to take place there.

In my limited knowledge of churches, I believe they are used quite similarly.

They read from the Torah (the first five books of the old testament).

Depending on which of the thousands of different reformed Judaism sects to which they might belong, they may also do any number of other things, including reading from the Talmud, a later holy book, compiled by Rabbis, which contains a number of passages about Jesus Christ and his blessed mother, which are extremely offensive and totally disrespectful.

Most of the old traditional practices have largely passed away.
