Ask them about it first. He probably knows what he did.. if he's willing to fix it without involving the law then let him..if he acts like he didn't do anything and you know he did.. call the police to settle it.

Since the neigbors were playing ball when the window was struck, I am going to assume it was not intentional. I would assume it was an accident and they hoped no one saw who did it. Since it appears to have been an accident, I would talk to the neighbors before calling anyone. Since it was not a criminal or intentional act, I can't see getting the police involved if it can be avoided. Get an estimate on replacing the window and let them know the amount. Might be a good idea to take a witness with you when you talk to them about the broken window. This might give you a bit more back up if later this issue had to go to small claims court. If replacing the window is a minor expense, personally I'd drop it if they refused to pay. I would not make a huge issue with a neighbor if they were unwilling to admit their guilt and I had not personally seen them break the window. Money may be the big issue here, but money isn't everything!

First go over and talk to them about it. If nothing is done you can a) claim it on your insurance, noting how it was damaged. This gives you the ability to pursue in small claims for damage repair. b) call the cops if it's really an issue. Would be easier to just go in and file a report with them. At some point, may take a couple of days, officer friendly will go and have a little chat. That might take care of it pronto!

Good luck

first see if the problem can be solved without the police come to an arrangement for payment until the window is fixed but if not you won't have choice but to call the cops.

How well do you know your neighbors? I hesitate to call the police unless it's life-threatening, but in my case I wish I had. I caught my neighbor's son throwing rocks at my dogs (in a fenced-in yard) I told the parents. Later the kid who walks my dogs said that he saw one of them scratching our car. When I told them this they became verbally abusive & then another of our cars was scratched. I feed 2 cats every morning. One's in our driveway & the other in theirs. She called the police & told him to tell me to stay off her property! I showed the cop the scratches on the cars & the e-mailed the police to tell them my side. Now I'm afraid they might try to poison the dogs. I wish I had called the police when I caught them throwing the rocks. I thought as adults we could work it out. In my case I was wrong.
