My boyfriend and I have 4 children between us, ages 2, 3, 3, and 4, and are finally selling our Mitsubishi for something more practical. What is a good vehicle that will hold all 6 of us, plus have room for groceries, toys, and all the fun stuff that come with kids? We drive a lot, as my family is 800 miles away, so we need something that's roomy, but is safe and dependable for long trips.

I'm more partial to the look of SUV's, but a van seems more practical.

Toyota Sienna or Honday Odyssey.

SUV's will kill you in gas/resale value. Both of the vans are roomy (little bit more room in Toyota), are fantastic to drive (especially on the highway), safe, reliable, and have outstanding resale value.

The third row in anything smaller than a Suburban or Explorer XL is painful for any trip longer than 1/2 an hour and does not provide enough room behind the 3rd row for a family of 6's luggage and stuff.

In the world of crossover vehicles you can get one that fits your needs exactly. I would seriously consider several things in making this choice.
The first is passenger room. I would get a seven passenger car at the minimum. This gives you the extra room for a friend or a relative. If you opt for a van you can get up to 9 passenger capability.
Secondly I would get a car that when fully loaded with all the kids and luggage is still comfortable to move around in and to drive safely.
Thirdly I would get a vehicle that gets reasonable mileage yet has the power to carry your family along at freeway speeds.
I think that when all of these factors are presented and you make a few test drives, you will probably find an ideal vehicle.

I've had a 1999 Dodge Caravan SE from new and it's been good to me. It's a 7 passenger with good space behind the back bench seat. I believe the safety rating for it is high. I think you'll find the interior of SUV's less roomy to that of a mini van. Regardless of what you decide on, get it serviced using the timetable in the owner's manual and you'll find it will be reliable.

I have 3 kids my self. I would suggest a mini van. Drives like a car, plus has the cargo room, sliding doors are excellent for loading kids. Most suv's are 5 passenger vehicles and 3 sit in 1 row. Plus they are harder to load kids in. I would Recommend the Mazda MPV, Honda Odyssey, New Dodge Caravan.

Get a Toyota Sienna or a Honda Odyssey. SUVs arent as safe as the minivans and the gas mileage isnt as great either.

The Sienna and Odyssey are the safest, most dependable and best minivans on the market. Gas mileage is pretty good. I have a Sienna and i get about 20-23 MPG.

Kinda partial to my folk's Chrysler Pacifica. Decent gas mileage (around 25-30 hwy) and seats 7. Standard type rear doors rather than the sliding type of a van. Jeep Commander also seats 7 though the gas mileage isn't as good.

Not real sure what's out there on the import side.

I think you should go with the three seater Chrysler Pacifica.

Roomy, Spacious, and Classy.Don't knmow exactly how much it is but it is decent on gas. Not sure what category it falls under but not a mini van and definitely not an SUV.

??? They hit the market years ago but now everyway I turn there they are

Family Vehile of 2006 is definitely the Chrysler Pacifica.

You can get a bigger SUV, like a Dodge Durango, Ford Expedition, Chevy Suburban or the GMC Yukon, they have three rows of seats. There are quite a few SUV's now with third row seating, they are gas hogs, but you need the room... Good luck! And let us know what you decide! :-)

I would definitely say a mini van is the best , it is more realistic for a large family and remember friends will be coming over to visit so make room!!! good luck
