I'm studying Islam, and while it's still Ramadan I'm going to try to fast tomorrow to experience it. However, I take Ritalin and I know it's supposed to be taken with food. What will happen if I take Ritalin on an empty stomach? I'm pretty sure I've inadvertently done it before, but I just want to hear what you have to say.

The reason why Ritalin is "suppose to be taken with food" is because it causes appetite supression soon after taking it. As a result--if you don't eat before you take your ritalin--it is unlikely that you will eat while it is working. SInce you plan to fast anyway-- it probably doesn't make a difference.

There is a "Ritalin patch" that is started while the child is sleeping- so it doesn't make a difference.

During Ramadan you fast during daylight, so if you can find a way to take it in the morning before daylight with food you can still do both.

Call a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist. Some medicines are worse than others when it comes to stomach irritation, so ask if it's ok.
