Trying to find out a bit more about these three past Operating Systems. Can someone give me a slight run down about the differences between these structures? Thanks.

Points given to more in depth answer.

Dos has been around before even Windows was invented. It is a very basic language for PCs. They consists of a series of commands that you input into the command prompt, and it is a high level way of locating your files, deleting files, managing files, etc.

UNIX derived from DOS. They have similiar syntax, but UNIX was designed more for coding. Normally in a unix environment, we can compile and code C/C++ and other mainframe related programming languages. People that know cobol, perl and other low level programming languages usually use UNIX as their coding environment. The syntax and structure is similiar to DOS, but UNIX is more versatile.

LINUX is an open source operating system that is based on a UNIX type environment. It is open source and the user has more control over their system and their files. Its a reliable operating system that most unix developers use if they do not like the thought of Windows controlling their files and programs.

DOS came first, then UNIX, then LINUX.

Linux has the same basic functinality as the commercial versions of Unix such as Sun Solaris, and there are no licence fees. I think the issue is more about what type of web server you want to run. The choice is Apache for Linux (open source, free), NES for Solarais or IIS for NT. All 3 are widely used and supported, with Apache being the most popular.DOS is too much code and dated, UNIX is inflexible and complicated.LINUX is improved all over the world on a daily basis, and can be understood by the average user.

DOS - of course, you are talking about the classic Microsoft text oriented, single threaded operating system for a 808x series Intel microprocessor. It is a simple command line system that supports simple text command "batch" files for automatic and semi-automatic operation in a single thread. A simulated secondary thread of processing could be used that is not regarded as real time.

Linux - an open source operating system that was built on many of the Unix operating system ideas as it's start. It can support multiple thread and real time operations.

Unix - a mostly proprietary main (or mainframe) oriented multi-threaded, multi-user system.
