There are many different and separate religions that are included in Hinduism. Hinduism was called Hinduism as a category of Hindu (Indian) religions to differentiate them from western religions.

The question has been nicely answered. One might add that Hinduism (along with Avestan/Gathic Zoroastrianism) can claim to be the lineal descendants of the original religion of the proto-Indo-European language speakers.
It is recognized that Hinduism has picked up a lot of native Indian motifs (i.e., from speakers of Dravidian languages).

Hinduism is not a religions created or established by any institution. or individual. It is a culture - a philosophy. It is known as sanathana dharma .It covers all aspects of the life including the worship of god of the people in the su continent of India.
