The whole point is so you don't have to walk up steps, right?

Like walkin up the damn escalator is gonna get you where you need to be that much faster than just standin' still for 30 seconds...

Some people are in a hurry such as if they are trying to catch the subway. Others prefer the extra bit of exercise.

In DC the etiquette rule on the escalators is stand to the right, leaving a clear path on the left for walkers to pass. Simple.

I don't know if Escalators are designed for people to walk up, or not, but it can be kind of annoying when you get someone behind you who is all in a hurry.

If there was an escalator and steps side by side, and I was in a hurry, I'd take the steps, because nobody stands still on the steps, but most people do when they're on an escalator.

actually incorrect. The escalator is formed as steps because it is a moving stairway not because it is a luxury line. If that were the case the escalator would be a Jetson's ramp.

Go to a large international airport were you have to travel long distances in a short amount of time. Its the same principle. Those are called people movers. You keep walking to get where you are going faster without straining your body, not because youa re lazy. Get in the way of a business man trying to connect to his flight in 15 minutes and the plane is taking off in 10 and you will be forced out of his way.

Escalators are not designed to be a carnival ride, although it seems everyone uses them that way. They are merely a quick moving staircase that allows you to reach the next level for quicker access and shopping spending. It does actually expediate your climb to the next level quicker, faster and with less strenuous movement.

They do it to get to places faster. Riding escalaters was so much fun as a kid. I could've done that all day.
