The other night a lady asked a question on Yahoo Answers and she said that she intended on commiting suicide. I gave the best answer I could but I don't know what has become of her. So I am just wondering if something happens like this again I could be better prepared in answering if someone truly needed my help.

I learned in my Human Growth class that 90% of all people that commit suicide talk about it first! A lot of people blow it off as depression or someone blowing smoke, the thing is we never know for sure. Should we be willing to take that risk and lose someone because we thought it would pass? I think the best thing anyone can do is tell someone to seek help and try to be supportive. They also need to be told that they are worth something because God doesn't make nothing! Everyone goes through low times in life and sometimes we have to hit rock bottom before we can come back up! I've been to that point, I've felt like I no longer wanted to live, and I praise God for his mercy, strength, and grace! Be a friend, show support, and pray for them.

If they ask for help, they are contemplateing, and most that ask for help have no intention of actually following through. It has been my observance as a support staff member of a chrisis unit that if they ask, they are reaching out because they feel that either thay cannot be heard, no one wants to listen or simple depression. We use to cell depression the Blues. But things change.
Anyhoots, because you answered possibly gave the asker some hope, or a feeling of hope, either way, is good.
I tiked your avee because you asked in another Q? and am responding.
There are entire books, volumes written on this subject so to explain in this forum is rather futile. Yet I can say that if a person is going to kill themselves, they do. If a person states they are going to kill themselves, listen to what they really want to say.

You just talk the person out of wanting to actually do it. Ask questions. Keep talking to them and help them find something else to do to solve their problems then commiting suicide.

i think you can only say what comes naturally to you otherwise it can all sound a bit textbook. i can imagine whatever you said to her helped her to realize there are people who care, its just comforting to know there are caring people out there!
