People tell me that I need to do running too as that burns the fat off but Im not able to run for a while because of recent opperation.

If muscle burns fat then will it burn some from my tummy through sit ups?

Yes, that will work fine. hard work but you will look good after a month or two. Do it at intervals. maybe 30 minutes before each meal?

sit ups will cause muscle development and are more likely to create a bulge..you need aerobic exercise to burn fat. swimming is excellent as crawl style straches the muscles. pilates is the only exercise that will flatten the tummy
