Wheels have spokes inorder to support the rim of the wheels

While the wheel in moving then due to the weight acting on them in an inclined fashion i.e. from the handle bar to the ground the wheels intend to bend. Hence these spokes will prevent this bending of wheels.

U would hv faced this prob i.e. if any spokes are broken then u will be able to see a bend in the wheel.

Few of the answers actually reply to your question, giving information about spokes rather than why spokes. Antoine Bachmann finally did answer, but there is more. Spokes produce a lighter wheel. This is important for a couple of reasons. It is easier to start and stop a lighter wheel, but also the wheel isn't as hard to turn. The weight of the wheel and its spin create a gyroscope effect, trying to keep the spinning wheel going in the same direction and subject to precession when you do try to turn it. This isn't a big thing on a car, but can be quite noticeable on a bicycle.

Also, the spokes and how they are installed can provide a flex for the wheel. If you look at a bicycle wheel, the spoke does not go directly from the rim to the nearest point on the hub. Instead, they usually to to a point almost 90 ° away on the hub. This provides some flexibility and cushioning to the ride. Going straight from rim to hub provides a much stiffer wheel. This is the way most sports car wire wheels are built.

Why Do Wheels Have Spokes

A spoke is one of some number of rods radiating from the center of a wheel (the hub where the axle connects), connecting the hub with the round traction surface.

The term originally referred to portions of a log which had been split lengthwise into four or six sections. The radial members of a wagon wheel were made by carving a spoke (from a log) into their finished shape. Eventually, the term spoke was more commonly applied to the finished product of the wheelwright's work, than to the materials he used.

Spokes can be made of wood, metal, or synthetic fiber depending on whether they will be in tension or compression.

Compression spokes
The original type of spoked wheel with wooden spokes was used for horse drawn carriages and wagons. In early motor cars, wooden spoked wheels of the artillery type were normally used.

In a simple wooden wheel, a load on the hub causes the wheel rim to flatten slightly against the ground as the lowermost wooden spoke shortens and compresses. The other wooden spokes show no significant change.

Wooden spokes are mounted radially. They are also dished, usually to the outside of the vehicle, to prevent wobbling.

Tension spokes
For use in bicycles, wooden-spoked wheels proved too heavy, so wheels with spokes made of tensioned, adjustable metal wires were introduced. These are also used in wheelchairs, motorcycles, and automobiles.

Types
Some types of wheels have removable spokes which can be replaced individually if they break or bend. These include bicycle and wheelchair wheels. High quality bicycles with conventional wheels use spokes of stainless steel, while cheaper bicycles may use galvanized (also called "rustless") or chrome plated spokes. Since bicycle and wheelchair wheel spokes are only in tension, flexible and strong materials, such as synthetic fibers, are also used.[ Metal spokes can also be ovalized or bladed to reduce aerodynamic drag, and butted (double or even triple) to reduce weight while maintaining strength.

Reaction to load
Pre-tensioned wire-spoked wheel react similarly to a load. The load on the hub causes the wheel rim to flatten slightly against the ground as the lowermost pre-tensioned spoke shortens and compresses by losing some of its pre-tension. Despite the common misconception that a bicycle wheel "hangs" from its upper spokes, the upper spokes show no significant change in tension.

Spokes are designed to support the rim of a wheel and these spokes are adjustable to make wheel retain its shape. Also helps in balancing the wheel.

For explanations, computer models, and tests confirming this odd behavior, see "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt, http://www.astounding.org.uk/ian/wheel/index.html, and Figure 10 in http://www.duke.edu/~hpgavin/papers/HPGavin-Wheel-Paper.pdf, which all show the lower spokes of pre-tensioned bicycle wheels compressing (losing their pre-tension) as they roll under a loaded hub.

spokes are lighter than a full wheel, and they use less material. As soon as you've got sufficient technology, it is a better deal, you can go faster with less energy, and you can make something else out of the material you have not used.

And, a spoked wheel can be repaired fairly easily, whereas a full wheel most often has to be replaced.

there is not any assessment between a steel spoked or solid or good aluminum motorbike rim Vs an extruded aluminum MTB rim, so forget with regards to the fool. How did you degree the rim to locate it became 15° off? Did you advise 15mm? the two way, it incredibly is merely too plenty. a save can real the wheel and make it rideable, yet that could desire to be on street purely, and purely till a sparkling wheel is put in.

Spokes are integral part of wheel in order to maintain rigidity of the wheel by transmitting the weight from vehicle to ground without getting deformed.

Wheel is an important finding to man.
To move fast & easy wheels helped.
To get full benifit. wheel should be perfect circle.
It will be easy to handle if it is light weighted.
Spokes do both.
