Of course you can. The USA is one of the very few countries that you do not need to obtain an exit visa to leave. I wonder how you plan to get to a foreign destination since air carriers will not fly you without a passport and visa if needed for your country of destination. You mentioned leaving the country ASAP, but you did not say if you planned on ever returning. Any citizen planning future foreign travel should pay close attention to the following:
Jan. 8, 2007 it will be a law that all people entering the United States by air or boat from Canada, Mexico, Panama, Bermuda and the Caribbean will need to show a passport. (This affects people traveling to Hawaii or Alaska or those taking cruises.)

By Jan. 1, 2008, people traveling over land borders will need a passport for re-entry.

Not without a passport. You should have gone with the expedited passport service. It's at a charge but it's fast. You could have also gone directly to the passport agency with your tickets and letter of explanation for why you needed to leave so quickly (usually a letter on letterhead from the employer or if it's for medical reasons, from the doctor.) I've had my passport turned around in 90 minutes this way.

Not much else you can do.

Depends on where your going and when you're coming back. Right now you can go to Mexico, Canada, any many Carribean countries without a passport, but those laws are changing after Dec. 31

Which country! Some you can get emergency travel docs if they agree w your reason. You're legally free to leave the UK w/out passport although many carriers want to see it to make sure they don't have to pay for you to come back if refused entry and you'll have a hell of a time getting back in unless you have it sent to you.

I didn't know you can leave a country without a passport. I know some countries don't require visas from some neighboring countries. No one's letting you out of your country or letting you in their country without a valid I.D. which in this case is your passport. So stay put until you get your passport.

You'll be asked to show our passport when you reach the border of another country, and they wouldn't let you in. You are allowed to leave, but you can't get into anywhere except Mexico and Canada. And, when you come back you won't be able to get back into America without a huge hassle.
