Without braces it's recommended to have your teeth cleaned twice a year. So, with braces, you should do it more - 4 times a year if you can. You 'd also have to be more diligent in cleaning your teeth on your own.

If you can afford it, get a power toothbrush. It's very helpful in cleaning around the brackets compared to a regular toothbrush. A power toothbrush also lets you focus more on cleaning your teeth without putting excessive pressure on your gums and without tiring your arm quickly. With a regular tootbrush you tend to rush your brushing before your arm gets tired. I've actually been able to maintain my teeth a lot better now that I have braces because of the power toothbrush. I probably will stop using it once my braces are gone simply because of the cost, but for now it's a magnificent tool.

A proxybrush also helps in cleaning the bottom areas between teeth where it's tough to thread a floss through.

Do you mean going to a dentist to have the cleaning done?
If so, 2 times a year is good. Most insurances only pay for 2 cleanings anyway.

Those with braces should be taking care of their teeth daily. Brushing and flossing are very important! Keep up the good dental hygenine so you can enjoy those beautiful pearly whites then the braces finally come off!

The post stating that general dentists don't know braces is a bit ignorant, sorry. One can simply state that having braces increases your chances of plaque buildup. But the only way to know how often you need to get your teeth cleaned is how well you can control the plaque buildup on your own. Any dentist/hygienist can test your plaque control, but probably (exceptions do exist) will not do a thorough job unless you pay them for their extra time. Also, the easy answer of "just brush more" isn't quite that easy. You may end up w/ more wear than just clean teeth. Brush and floss correctly would be my answer. You might also try a water-pick device as additional debris removal. Good Luck.

I have a brace, but never did any teeth cleaning. Don't think you can actually have any done while you have the treatment?

Although it is important that you take care of it or it could scar your teeth for life.

I use 2 brushes, one normal and one small one, plus Listerine mouthwash (great to heal/treat minor cuts that you get from the appliance).

If in doubt, you can still ask your consultant :) You should see him/her every 4-6 weeks to adjust the brace... Good luck!

Wow. Good Question. I don't think I ever got my teeth cleaned when I had braces. They just cleaned them when I had them taken off. But I guess It would be the same as if you didn't have them. 2 times a year should do.

Keep your regular cleaning schedule as planned. Just let your regular dentist know that you have braces because they would have to prepare special cleaning tools in advance.

Same as if you didnt have braces, but you should also brush more frequently, since food gets "stuck" behind the wires...Also, use a good mouthwash before brushing to loosen up particles....
