I have a 42" LCD TV and I understand a specific type of power conditioner is required for these.

Yes, they do exist.

It's not required per se, but they are highly recommended.

Monster Cable's UPS500 should work for what you need, it filters the power and provides uninterrupted power.

It's available at Circuit City, here's a link to the item.

I don't know about the TV requiring a specific type of power conditioner, but most larger UPS devices also condition the UPS outlets and usually the non-UPS outlets.
The outlets are clearly marked as UPS or conditioned only.

I looked at several 42" LCD TVs and none indicated any specifications about power conditioning.

My advice is go with Panamax. Panamax makes superior units but if you've got a flat-panel I wouldn't worry so much about the UPS...if its a projection LCD then a UPS is more important since there is a lamp that needs to be cooled by a fan. Expect to spend about $350 on a quality unit.
