Yes and no.

The most common form of motor neurone disease is known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The vast majority of cases are sporadic and are NOT inherited. Only 10% of cases ARE inherited.

For a subset of these cases there are a number of known gene mutations which cause inherited ALS which can be checked out IF there is a family history of motor neurone disease. If there isn't a family history the probability of genetic inheritance is extremely low and the test wouldn't be performed in someone who has no signs of motor neurone disease.

There are also rarer forms of motor neurone disease which are genetic which can be tested for, but again there are specific clinical features which would lead a neurologist to make the diagnosis and the genetic test (in the absence of a family history) would only be done in those cases.
