I believe it is 10 to 12 in most states. This also depends on the maturity of the child.

None in the UK. It is illegal to leave them and go off on holiday unless they are 16 and thus legally adults...depends on the maturity of the child and how well they will cope. Some can cope fine at age 10 others not even when they're old enough to get wed.

Suggest that leaving a child alone for any length of time is not a good idea and that you shouldn't really start until they're at secondary school. Never leave them overnight or all day such as during the holidays, weekends etc. children like the security of an adult around even if they snub you totally when they come home from school. A couple of hours is fine if you are sure they can cope and you have discussed this with them and can trust them to do as you have said (not answering the door, not telling anyone on the phone that you're out). But at some time we need to start to let go of our children and so, if that means leaving them whilst you go to the supermarket and you know they've got your mobile number and can use the phone...

Check your state laws. In my state the age is 12, but not over night. A 12 year can also babysit unsupervised for up to 4 hours.

this is a really tricky one cos apparently their is no legal age, but if you leave them home alone and someone reports you or something happens to them then you will be prosecuted.

Personally I would say it depends on how trustworthy and grown up the child is, I would say high school age children woudld be okay for up to a couple of hours, whereas primary school should be supervised.

i don't think there is a "legal" age. it all depends on the child, how long you will be gone, and whether or not there are neighbors or family close. but keep in mind that children under the age of 12 are too young to be certified baby sitters.

There is no legal age in the UK. It is only illegal to leave them in dangerous situations or over night if they are under 16. If you're American then it varies from state to state.
