I would recommend that you ship it instead of carrying it on the plane. Airlines are not exactly "gentle" with luggage.
Most good wineries will ship, either free or for a small fee.
I have had scotch shipped from Scotland with no breakage. Makes the luggage easier to carry, too.

Most of the wineries in Napa have shipping containers in 3, 6 or 12 bottle sizes - typically a stryofoam insert in a sturdy box. How many of these you can bring back on the plane with you (as checked baggage) will depend upon your airlines checked baggage policies - check with them.
However, as someone who has done both, I would recommend having the wineries ship directly for you if possible - they give great case discounts, and will often ship 1/2 case and case lots for free. Whether or not they can ship directly to you depends upon where you live - many states/municipalities have laws regarding the shipment of liquor (although, in some states, the laws aren't enforced because it's likely they won't survive a legal challenge.)
When purchasing wine to bring home, don't bother buying any thing you can get at home. For example, Sutter Home has a nice winery near Napa, but 95% of the wines available there are available from your local liquor store. Buy your wines from the smaller, more exclusive wineries.
Finally, make sure you visit the V. Sattui Winery and try their Gamay Rouge!

As many as you want in your *checked* baggage. You can't carry any on the plane with you -- it's "liquid over 3 ounces", and is not allowed.
You should know that most wineries will happily arrange to ship a few bottles or a case directly to your house for a very small shipping charge -- so you don't have to carry any back with you, just have them shipped. Much easier :)
Enjoy your trip, Napa is very nice, and fall is a great time to go there.

For domestic flights you can carry on up to 6 bottles, and for international flights it depends on the country. Italy only allows you to export 2 bottles, for example. If you properly package your wine, you can check full 12-bottle cases at the airport. Not sure how many, but I'm sure you can take one full case. Our Napa winery will also ship the wine to you assuming that your state will allow us to. Some states prohibit this. Ask the tasting room personnel if they can direct ship it to you.

This assumes you are from the United States. Otherwise you could be limited in order to avoid customs duties. If you are from the US and returning to a city in the US, then you can bring unlimited in your checked baggage. I have done this numerous times and have not had a problem. Additionally, I can say that I have avoided breakage which would have ruined my clothes and etc! Ideally, you would want them shipped to your home, but if you are like me and would rather risk it than pay for shipping, go for it! Just be sure to package well. A roll of tape and some bubble wrap will go a long way.

My advice is to have them UPS'd or Fed Ex'd to your home separately. That's what I always do. Many vineyards offer to do this for free if you buy in quantity. Never hurts to ask. With all the goofy over zealous restrictions on airlines right now, I would not even try it!
Heck I even Fed Ex my suit cases and travel with just my purse and a change of underwear anymore - just to avoid the hassles!!! Pretty soon I am going to stop flying. I am not afraid to fly or afraid of terrorists, I am sick of the airport hassles!

Welcome to the Valley! Unfortunately I believe wine is still forbidden in carry-ons. The wineries here are more and more accomodating about shipping for you. If you have several different wines, take them to the UPS store on 2nd St. downtown. They proudly advertise that they ship wine.
If you have any other questions, email me. And enjoy your stay, the weather is beautiful right now!

If you pack them and check them then it's unlimited. If you want to carry them on - they might try to take them away because of the "No Liquids" policy. If you ask the wineries - they can ship any wine you buy to your house (normally at no charge)
