Turn prisons into work centers like they used to be. Prisons used to be self suffecient, they would provide service to the community, and inmates would atone for their misdeeds through labor aimed at benefitting the people they had wronged. Now prisons are a burden to the taxpayer, whereas they ought to be a benefit. Use prisoners to grow their own food, have them make simple things for others to use. Once people see that prison isnt just a little community of miscreants and realize that its actually going to involve work and some hardship, they may think twice about committing a crime.

The prisons of today are just a spa compared to those of yesterday. Its more of an educational institution to learn how to get away with crime than learn that crime is not right. We have to reach people at a young age the difference between right and wrong. Today's parents are not interested or do not take the time to teach their children respect for others or themselves. Its time to get back to basics of a good family life with parents who are there to show their children the right path to follow.

Set up townships that are guarded on the outside. Put all violent/repeat offenders in them. Drop food at the door, but require the township to make goods in exchange for food and services. If they kill each other make sure they bury the bodies properly to avoid disease.
Stay strictly outside the township - let them figure out what kind of society they want, because they clearly don't want to live in our kind of society.
If they survive, they can come out at the end of their sentence. No early release, no parole.

How about we stop filling our prisons with innocents? We have more of our population in prison than any other country, yet we still have an absurd amount of crime. Is it because people are actually committing that many crimes, or are we just imprisoning minorities based on racial profiling? Also there are too many "crimes" that warrant prison time that are forced on the communities where these people live. When a young kid goes to prison for have a quarter pound of weed on him, is this right? Maybe he is just trying to survive the only way he can.

Diversify.
There are jobs they should be able to do, if prisons are turned into rehabilitation centers, as much as possible.
