I've been involved in a 12 step program for years.Someone said something last night that got me wondering...Is it possible for a Politician, used car salesman or an attorney to work a rigoriously honest program? The reason this came up is that these careers tend to operate in self serving gray areas or sometines outright lies, just to protect their own interest, make a profit, or to retain/get more power. There are three types of lies:

#1. Lies of comission, where people just don't tell the truth, and outright lie.

#2.Lies of omission, where people tell part of a story, but not everything that needs to be known.Just to protect themselves from consequenses or loss.

#3.Lies of asention, where people act like they agree with you,but in reality they don't agree with you at all.

In these Careers people "usually" tell these lies on a daily basis. So how can they do that, and work a rigorously honest program?

I say "usually" because not all of them lie,or are in recovery.

Huh, I have never thought of that. You have a very good question here! I guess they would have to be 10th stepping every 5 minutes while they are working. If they are truly working the program, I would think they would want to change the area of their profession or get a new one that wouldn't compromise their new found spiritual principals.

From what I have seen, they justify it by using words and phrases in sentences that can be construed to mean different things. For example Bush says that never said that the war in Iraq had anything to do with 9/11 BUT he used those 2 terms in the same sentence repeatedly to try and win the US to sympathize with the war. It's totally underhanded and misleading. In my opinion is dishonest.

Another example is the new All Natural 7-UP. It makes you immediatly think now it's good for you right? Well, they use high fructose corn syrup whish is NOT healthy nor do I consider a man altered sweetener as natural. They get away with it because the FDA has not defined the word "natural". So again not necessarily lies but it's still not honest.

Is it right? No. But unfortunately by misconstruing words and meanings they can justify it.

"Rigorous honesty"? In a 12step program? You make me laugh.

People in AA/NA kept telling me to "fake it 'til you make it", "act as if", and pretend I wasn't an atheist.

I'd attend a lot of meetings, stop for a few years, go back and see some of the same people, and my how their stories had grown in the time I was gone!

My last sponsor still owes me $600 from 4 years ago and still comes up with excuses.

The way I stay sober is by keeping away from the liars, cheats, and drama queens in the rooms. I went out and got a life. After all, isn't that why people get sober in the first place? Or to hide in church basements swapping lies about how bad they used to be?

That is a very good point ....... but I think lying becomes part of someone and they cant tell what is real and what is a lie no matter what kind of lie. A program would be worth a try for some but for others it would be hopeless....in a group setting they would all be lying to each other

Most of these professionals do not lie as a matter of course. It's only the few that give those professions a bad name. Anyone can be a liar on the job, whether they scrub toilets or are the CEO of Enron.

It's possible to be rigorously honest and still work in any field. You just won't be that popular.
