Does the pope do this? Some even nail themselves to a cross at easter (obviously, someone else is needed to bang in the nails). I don't this practice of self-inflicted pain is widespread, but what is the logic and how common is it?

Most just torture themselves by attending Mass.

This is practiced by Opus Dei still, most other catholics torture themselves with the immense guilt, being a catholic means you feel guilty for any enjoyment - I was once a catholic and thank the Gods I left it all behind!
There is no logic to it. Why would an infinnite being want his creations to feel pain? Surely someone so powerful wouldn't be bothered about such a barbaric thing.

Or I will rephrase it - if a father expected his children to self harm to prove their love to him would the world think him a good father or would social services take the children away and lock him up? I think the latter is most likely.

As to how common it is, most, if not all catholics go on fasts which I think is a form of torture, and are encouraged to do so regularly.

The belt worn around the leg is not intended to draw blood and is not worn all the time; it merely provides discomfort, I think, as a reminder of Christ's suffering. Dan Brown lied about many things. There are no monks in Opus Dei. The few Catholics who recreate the crucifixion are generally in developing countries like the Phillippines and the practice is discouraged by the Vatican.

Ouch!! Isn't the hair shirt enough? Jeez, now I got to do this weird stuff too? What the heck do we get out of all this suffering anyway? I can't even get a Papal Bulle for Christ's sake, one little indulgence to directly ascend me into Heaven is all I want; but noooo!! They don't do that anymore ( Or so they say, You just can't trust a Priest with this stuff. ), I bet if I ponied up some cash I'd get one!!! Well they can forget it, I'm not mortifing my flesh just so some weird old Man feels right about Jesus; I've problems of my own; and that isn't going to make them go away!

These days Catholics torture themselves - and the world - not with a 'celice' but with a 'Céline'.

Her warbling creates terrible torture for the whole world from her stage in Las Vegas (a/k/a 'limbo') where she puts forth her torture twice a day...

Belting myself I do not, but as a Christian lately I had decided to abstain myself from any sex activities, till today seeing those beautiful pics of Paris Hilton. Wow I never had such fun before.
