I don't wanna put him on the spot espeically since he's never had a g/f. he's 18 and 2 hours away at college.How can I confirm we're together or he wants to be with me, without it being awkward for him?

It IS going to be awkward. Accept that fact and embrace it and then act accordingly. Just make sure you've addressed the fact that this may change things in ways you haven't expected...good or bad.
Either way, you won't have to wonder.
