and why can't we build on that. we will never rid the world of religion, just the same as the world will never be all of one religion. two extremes. there has to be some common ground. i realize that there will always be the extremes with some people but you would think that there would be a majority of beliefs that people agree with and from there they could each have their own set of minor beliefs, with respect for others. some people will say we already have that but if we did you'd think there'd be less hate and violence in regards to varying religions.

not all religions vehemently oppose others, saying theirs is right, quite a few mind their own business.

not all religions believe in a divine savior either, some believe that quality lies within oneself.

a lot of you aren't being all inclusive, you're only factoring in major religions.

i like your question. i just believe in doing good and doing what is right. i think people in all religions are taught to respect others. but the funny thing is that religion makes the opposite happen. it seperates people and even creates hate among some people.

All legitimate religions agree on the idea of some kind of afterlife, whether that be Heaven, reincarnation, enlightenment leading to a different plane of consciousness, or whatever. The reason why we can't build on this commonality is that the many different religions see the afterlife differently, so once you scratch the surface you find more diversity than commonality. Getting along on this planet is up the individual -- when enough people take responsibility for themselves and their actions, religious differences will no longer matter. At least that's what I think.

The world has the same basic ideas of what is "right" and "wrong". Although they differ per culture, they are fundamentally the same.

Example: In some cultures it is ok to have more than 1 wife while in others it is wrong to have more than one. Even though these sound different, they both follow the same rule... A man can't have ANY woman he wants.

The violence comes from religions that have extreme ideas.

I believe there is only one God. God is the only way to get to heaven. Am I going to kill anyone who doesn't believe this? Absolutely not! But there are some religions where this would be the case.

99% of religions agree on the same basic rules, they just seem to have a problem with the path to get there. Think about it... is there a viable religion out there that officially condones murder, theft, adultery and betrayal? (and if any bigots says 'islam does', i'm going to throw a shoe at them).

If we take the three western religions- Judaism, Christianity and Islam- they all pray to the same God, they just can't decide who is a messiah or just a prophet. Each one thought they were finishing the one before it. So in reality, these are so similar its scary! Its just that they get hung up on who is God's messiah. Sad, huh?

all religions agree on the stupidy of all the other religions. and actually the world will be one religion some day. it will be the New World Order. The bible tells us about it. there is hate and violence within religions, so that wont fix it. i see where your coming from, but you need to look in another direction. Jesus is the only way. he says so.

They don't have any common ground, except that they deal in 'belief', or ideas founded without evidence, basis, or proof.

Humanity needs to stop giving so much weight to their 'beliefs' if we are to lower the hate and violence that are caused by extremists.

The Parliament of the World's Religions was a meeting of the world's religions was an attempt to answer your question. They came up with four statements common to all religions--Don't kill, don't lie, don't steal, and don't be sexually immoral.

The Existence of one and only Almighty God/Allah is agreed by all major or minor religions. The wars we see nowadays are not religious wars, they are wars imposed by the corrupt politicians who are acting like little Pharaohs to achieve power.

my opinion only : THE BELIEF IN A DIVINE BEING NO MATTER WHAT NAME THEY REFER TO THEM AS. -- A BETTER PLACE ONCE THIS PLANE OF EXISTENCE IS LEFT BEHIND THROUGH DEATH-- these are the similarities and as far as I am concerned the only basic differences other than THE NAME THE DIVINE BEING is called are the differences in the Ritual and Ceremonies each religious belief system perform in their worshiping, adoration, calling upon THE DIVINE BEING.

1) Life is but a dream. So, row, row, row your boat.

2) You will survive physical death in some fashion.

3) Without divine direction, life is emptiness and death will be also.

4) Find that direction at all costs in this life. Pursue Life. (I am SO tempted to cut and paste!!! but, in the spirit of generalization, I won't)
