No America will no be at war with N.Korea.

North Korea is often dismissed as a backward nation in poverty. However, they have one of the best equipped, well trained and committed military forces in the world. Any conflict would be unpredictable in terms of damage to America, but would certainly be a long and bloody war.

America could not commit ground troops as they cannot match N.Korea in numbers or training. N.Korea has 120,000 Special Forces, the largest SF in the world. Their standard force is 1.2 to 1.6 million plus 100,000 national guard. They also have around 4.0 million trained & ready to call-up militia & another 900,000 trained youth military.

Their sea defences include some 16 naval squadrons with a total of 800 ships, unknown quantity of subs, sophisticated high speed ship-to-ship missiles, ground to ship missiles & rapid attack boats for close rocket strikes. They are too powerful as a naval force.

Their air-force isn't as advanced as America's, but they do have over 1,500 combat jets, including Mig-19, Mig-21, F-15E and F14's among others. They also have thousands upon thousands of surface to air missiles and deep bunker command bases.

They have nukes, but couldn't deliver them to the US (I hope). They can't match the electronic warfare or stealth attack capability that America has.

People shouldn't dismiss N.Korea's ability. They significantly defeated American troops during the Korean War & are more of a danger today.

North Korea has the power to inflict heavy losses on any enemy, but also importantly the desire & political will to make any conflict lengthy and economically disastrous to America. The US has nothing to gain & everything to lose if war is declared. No other nation would back the US.

Besides, N.Korea has no oil to steal and a conflict would also create tension between the US & China as the Korean people would flood into China seeking refuge

Very unlikely to be a war. The USA need not bother too much about NK since China is being given a dominant role in keeping 'The Dear Leader' in check. Although China is not going to do much about examining cargo entering NK, it is proposing to cut off grain and other essentials in accordance with the UN sanctions. That should have a salatary effect on NK's boss.

Also, NK does not have any oil reserves, so the US will not be too interested in starting a conflict. In any case, NK now has nuclear capacity and (possibly) the means for short range delivery. Thus, if the USA attacked NK what do you think China would do? stand by and see a possible nuclear exchange occur on its border? No it would not! And any ensuing confrontation would be a bit longer than 3 minutes.

With the total disaster ongoing in Iraq and the unresolved Afghanistan situation, I don't think Bush would want a third area of conflict. The current two conflicts are not going very well, even though the 'enemy forces' are only lightly armed - so think what might happen if US forces faced a nuclear armed nation with a big, sympathetic, well armed neighbour!

On the present evidence we are not on the brink of WW3, though you can never be too sure of Mr B's thoughts on the matter....

No. At the moment North Korea has NO power projection capabilities.
It has virtually no naval capability, consisting of patrol craft and some Golf/Romeo class Soviet-era submarines (which are no match for a modern sub or destroyer).
Whilst it has an impressively large airforce of approximately 1600 aircraft, many of these are in a state of disrepair and the only aircraft the North has that poses a threat to the South Korean/USAF is the Mig-21, of which it only has 150
It also has NO aircraft manufacturing capability, relying solely on imports. Following a blockade any aircraft destroyed is gone, unlike South Korea and the US which can keep on making them.
.
North Korea's most modern tank is the T-72, which is incapable of penetrating the forward armour on a British Challenger or US Abrahms. Considering most of South Korea's and the US's armour is facing forward in bunkered posisitions as a static defence line it makes the North's armoured capability quite useless.
The ONLY 2 things North Korea has as an advantage are it's infantry numbers and artillery, both number in thousands.
As for nukes, as I'm sure someone will mention them.
North Korea so far has 1 nuke and no method of delivering it.
USA has 5800 active warheads,
UK 200-250
China 100-150.
The UK alone has enough firepower and the means to deliver it to turn North Korea into a smooth, shiny glassy rock. We also have the capabilities to manufacture more without fear of our facilities being bombed.

If or when we go to war with North Korea no one knows. However, it will not be in the next year or two even because it takes longer than that to get troops in order. One think you can count on though is the fact that there will always be a war. Which is why we need more enlisted soldiers to help fight for our freedoms that we take for granted everyday.

I think that this time we might actually try every attempt at diplomacy, considering our financial over-extention in Iraq, not to mention all of the natural disasters our country has had to pay to fix lately and the Israel-Hezbollah situation. We literally can not afford to get into another war with a lot of our service members coming back home from 2nd and 3rd deployments overseas and increasing numbers of casualties. We most likely will try to encourage China to become an ally and hope that they cut off petroleum and other food supplies to N. Korea in hopes of starving them out of their need for dictatorship.

While the two militaries have signed an Armistice, our two Nations have been at war since 1950.

I realize this is not what you meant. I sincerely doubt the US would initiate a return to combat operations. There is no one in the region that wants to see north Korean regime change. The Chinese and the South Koreans fear the refugees far more than they fear nukes. They think the nukes would go to Japan anyway.

That said, it doesn't hurt to pray . . . just in case.

What are the 1.2 million troops going to do for transport?

Ride some donkeys to Japan?

They can barely feed their people at the moment without out help so all we would have to do is stop sending them food!

Lets hope not, because our troops are stretched to this as it is, so we would have no choice but to use nuclear weapons, and that would lead to WWIII.
I am all for destroying North Korea, but I would like to see it done in a more conventional way.
