Welcome to the world of dealing with the public!!! I have been in retail for most of my working life and even owned several of my own stores. People feel that when they come into that store that you are there to serve them...and to an extent they are right. A lot of them carry it way too far though. They expect you to cater to every need, and do everything but wipe their a**, and if they thought you would they'd ask you to do that too!! They figure if they have to pay the high prices for everything they buy, it should come with full service, thus the guy who will drive all the way across town to find a full service gas station, passing 5 self serves along the way. They figured that's what your getting paid to do, so do it. I could understand if it were a handicapped or elderly person, but some of these people could use the extra exercise. They are just too lazy, or trying to push you to the brink of going off on them so they can go home and have a story to tell about the mean cashier...or worse call your boss and complain so they can get something free!! These are not stupid people...they're just a bunch of *******!

I always put almost all my stuff on the counter. The exception is when I tried to put a case of beer on the counter, I've been told to leave it IN the cart. The cashier will peek into the cart and type in the number instead of me hauling it out and them having to pick it up for scanning, and pick it up again to put it back into the cart. I've seen so many cashiers with wrist or elbow guards from tendonitis. So I always ask the cashier "Do you want me to take this out of the cart?" Every single time they say "Nope, just leave it there."
But all my little stuff goes on the belt and I get a divider bar for the next person in line.

These people think that you are getting paid to be there and be at their beckon call. Therefore, it's all right in their mind to be rude to you. They have never worked a customer service type job and don't know what it's like. I've seen this in other scenarios too. I worked retail and when I shop and don't want something, I'll go put it back where it goes and not drop it anywhere. My friend is a waitress and when we go out to dinner with friends, she'll push in all the chairs around the table as we're leaving. I think everyone needs to have some sort of job in customer service because their perspective completely changes.

Isn't there some liability involved with removing stuff from a customer's cart? For instance, what if you removed something that was too heavy for you to safely lift? What if you removed something the customer didn't actually want to buy? I think it boils down to expecting to work in a safe work environment.
Next time, try asking them (nicely) to empty their cart after asking them if they've finished shopping. If they refuse, serve the next person in line.

Not taking your stuff out of the cart is just asinine. Just wait for them to give you the stuff they want to buy. You can't make any assumptions!
As for the basket, sometimes I leave my stuff in a basket because it keeps it together and doesn't make a mess all over the counter. I see it as easier. *shrug*

Lazy bastards...in high school I worked as a cashier in a grocery store and some old man threatened to knock me out b/c I told him not to come through the express lane with more than 10 items.

I understand you are perturbed, by why let the "bstrds get to ya"? I agree that it's asking a lot of customer service from you as a checker. Have you just tried asking them nicely with a smile to empty their baskets onto the conveyer? Have a better day :)

Those are called people who wants everything on a plate. They expect you to go around and take their stuff out for them. That is not your job. Just stand there and wait for them to finally figure out whatthe plan on buying and go ahead with the ringing up of the sales.

I find it to be rude and annoying. Just take the stuff out. It isn't that damn difficult. Why should the checker have to do everything for you?
