recently the top layer of my wisdom tooth was exposed revealing a hard yellow substance. I began to pick at it (i know i probably shouldn't have) but I did anyway and it began to chip away and it looked like what might happen when popcorn builds up. Does anyone know what this is?

It is tarter and it can get darker if you smoke or drink coffee. Because your wisdom teeth are so far back in your mouth they are harder to reach with your toothbrush. You need a good cleaning by the dentist to remove all that and make sure you floss well back there. Flossing is more important than brushing believe it or not. Floss like mad. If you allow tarter to build up like that eventually it can cause bone lose and then you can lose the tooth. Try to get it taken care of asap.
